He grew up in a family where his younger brothers also pursued literary careers, and he developed an early affinity for painting and music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe moved to Tokyo at the age of 20 and attended art school, but did not stay long, mostly teaching himself oil painting. During this time, he also published detective and fantasy novels under the pen name Heizo Jimi, earning praise from Edogawa Ranpo.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe traveled to Paris in 1931 and returned to Japan the following year. Afterward, he primarily exhibited his works at the Kokugakai exhibition. He observed familiar subjects such as still lifes, landscapes, figures, and cats for long periods, slowly continuing his creative work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe is also known for his creative stance of being unable to paint without the subject directly in front of him, and there is an anecdote that one of the whiskers in his masterpiece \"Cat\" was left unfinished. His existence became widely known through frequent mentions in Toru Suzunouchi's essays.
