The land of the unconquered. In the land where they were born, they live their daily lives with fear and respect for nature, and with modest emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness.
This photo book was created by photographer Masaru Tatsuki, who received international acclaim for his debut work, DECOTORA (published by Little More in 2007). Over a period of approximately five years, from July 2006 to April 2011, he traveled to Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima many times to capture the lives, customs, rituals, and culture of the people living in those areas.
Self-mummified monks, piercing fishermen, the Sumin Festival, female jumpers, mountain gods, itako, deer hunters, Natsuya deer dance, Ogamisama, Matagi, Suneka, Kashimasama, Soma Nomaoi, Akita dogs, Oshirasama... The 72 photographs collected here are full of premonitions of recovery. This is an ambitious work that squarely confronts people who believe in the future and live strong, humane lives. _____From the publisher's introduction
