This book is the official catalogue published for the "David Hockney: A Retrospective" exhibition, which toured various locations in Japan in 1989 (Seibu Museum of Art, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, National Museum of Art, Osaka, etc.).

This exhibition traces the creative trajectory of Hockney, one of the 20th century's leading British painters, spanning approximately 30 years, from his early works to his 1980s photo collages. It offers a comprehensive look at Hockney's exploration of the relationship between "seeing" and "drawing" through a variety of creative endeavors, including his pool series depicting the light of Los Angeles, portraits of family and friends, stage art, and photographic works.
The large-format layout vividly reproduces the details and colors of the work, making it a valuable resource for tracing the artist's creative career.

David Hockney

Born in Bradford, England in 1937.
He began to stand out while studying at the Royal College of Art, and by the 1960s he had become internationally known as a representative painter of Pop Art.

He moved to the United States in 1964 and based his practice in Los Angeles. As seen in his representative works depicting swimming pools, he depicted light and air with clear compositions and vivid colors. Since the 1970s, he has actively incorporated new technologies, such as his photo collage series "Joiner," stage design, and iPad drawings, while continuing to question the relationship between "seeing" and "reproduction."

His popularity continues to transcend generations, with the first large-scale retrospective in Japan, "A Retrospective," held in 1988, and the "David Hockney" exhibition being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2023.
He is currently based in the UK and France and continues to work energetically.
