Official catalogue of the large-scale retrospective held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in 2016.
The book's cover was designed by Yoshihisa Tanaka, and features a minimalist design that echoes Ruff's rigid and precise image.

Thomas Ruff (born 1958 in Germany) is a representative artist of the "Becher School," who studied under the Bechers at the Düsseldorf Art Academy along with Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth. Since the 1990s, he has been known as a leader in contemporary photography.

This catalog covers all 18 of his series, from his early series "Interieurs" to his famous giant portraits "Porträts," "cassini" and "ma.rs" that stem from his interest in space, "nudes" and "jpeg" that delve into the visual environment of the internet age, and "press++," which includes works that have never been shown before.
In addition to photographs he has taken himself, he also uses existing images such as internet images and old photographs as material, tracing the trajectory of Ruff's research as he continues to question the structure of the photography medium itself.

This is the first major exhibition catalog compiled for a full-scale retrospective at a Japanese art museum, and provides a systematic understanding of Ruff's multifaceted work.

Thomas Ruff

Born in Zell am Harmersbach, Germany in 1958.
He studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and is internationally known as a representative photographer of the so-called "Becher School."

Since the early 1980s, he has attracted attention with his "Interior" and "Portrait" series, which feature everyday subjects shot from the front, and has questioned the objectivity and documentary nature of photography. Since then, he has produced a variety of series, including "Star," "Night Sky," "JPEG," and "press++," centered on themes such as the principles of photographic creation, informational properties, and the circulation of images.

Ruff's work is highly acclaimed for its critical expansion of the medium of photography, not just the act of photography itself, but also for its proactive incorporation of digital processing, archival materials, and internet images. His works are held in museums around the world and have been the subject of numerous international and solo exhibitions.
