Photo book "Images of Pandora Tokyo 1971-1975" by Japanese photographer Akio Uchibori.

Akio Uchibori's first book, comprising monochrome snapshots taken on the streets of Tokyo from 1971 to 1975.

Tokyo in the early 1970s, still buzzing with the heat of rapid economic growth. The gazes of young people, commuters, drunken revelers, signboards, Jizo statues, back alleys, construction sites, posters, windowpanes—countless fragments hidden in the urban everyday are captured with keen observation and excellent snapshot technique.

The characteristic of this book is that, unlike the styles of Daido Moriyama and Takuma Nakahira, which emphasize the photographer's strong subjectivity, the hustle and bustle of the city itself and the presence of people naturally emerge. Motoki Irisawa, an editor from Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, also points out that Uchibori's photographs show the strong presence of the subjects themselves rather than the "will to press the shutter."

What is depicted are not special events. However, within these ordinary urban landscapes, the loneliness, anxiety, and ennui hidden behind the rapid economic growth, and the anonymous presence of urban dwellers, quietly seep through.

While a photo book documenting Showa-era Tokyo, it does not remain mere nostalgia. It is an excellent collection of snapshots that continues to observe the distance between cities and people with a dry gaze.

Akio Uchibori (1950-)

Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1950. Photographer.

After graduating from Japan Photography Academy, he continued to work at a commercial studio while photographing the streets of Tokyo. He developed his unique snapshot photography, focusing on urban landscapes and people's daily lives from the 1970s onwards.

His representative work, "Images of Pandora Tokyo 1971-1975," sharply depicts the anonymity and emptiness drifting in Tokyo after the period of rapid economic growth, and the presence of urban dwellers. Since the 2000s, he has also published works such as "Kaze Machi" and "Machi Tokyo 1976-2001," establishing himself as an important artist of urban snapshot photography.

His perspective is characterized by avoiding flashy staging and excessive assertions, instead capturing subtle discomforts and human presences drifting in the city.
