The exhibition catalog by Alec Soth, "A Room of Rooms," reconstructs the artist's nearly 30-year career from the perspective of "rooms." Soth, known as a full member of the international photography collective Magnum Photos, has earned high acclaim for his works that narratively weave together the relationship between people and places, primarily in the American Midwest.

This book is the official catalog for the exhibition "Alec Soth: A Room of Rooms" held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in 2024. It includes works ranging from his early masterpiece "Sleeping by the Mississippi" to his latest work "Advice for Young Artists," many of which were shot indoors.

Among these, "I Know How Furiously Your Heart is Beating" is a series where Soth visited people in various places and photographed their portraits and personal belongings in the "rooms" where they lived their daily lives, forming the core of this exhibition. The intimacy pervading the tranquil spaces and the gaze that quietly approaches the inner lives of the subjects are striking.

The "rooms" that Soth captures are not just spaces but emerge as places where people's memories, time, and traces of their existence overlap. This book once again highlights the essence of Soth's expression, which approaches the inner world of others through photography.

Alec Soth (1969-)

One of the leading contemporary American photographers.
He captures the vast landscapes of the American Midwest and the daily lives of the people who live there with a poetic and unique perspective. While inheriting the tradition of documentary photography, he skillfully expresses the distance from his subjects and subtle nuances of emotion, evoking deep empathy from viewers.

Many of his works are shot using an 8x10 inch large format camera.
This large camera shooting is a very time-consuming process, but in return, it imbues the photographs with exquisite detail and a unique atmosphere. The unhurried time created between him and his subjects also contributes to his intimate portraits.

His representative works include "Sleeping by the Mississippi," which he photographed while traveling along the Mississippi River, and "Broken Manual," which focuses on airports in small American towns.
