Daido Moriyama: Hokkaido (Published by Rat Hole Gallery)
This significant photobook compiles works by Daido Moriyama that were shot over approximately three months in Hokkaido in 1978 and remained unpublished for about 30 years. Spanning a voluminous 664 pages, the book prominently features Moriyama's characteristic expressions, such as rough graininess and high contrast. It encapsulates his feelings during that period, as he sought to escape from a sense of "ennui" and found himself captivated by Hokkaido as an "exotic land," marking it as a crucial turning point in his career.
"Hokkaido and its many towns, which once so occupied my heart. I still occasionally wonder where that excitement I felt crossing the Tsugaru Strait has gone, and it remains a lingering feeling within me. The photobook about Hokkaido, which I promised three years ago, still doesn't have a single print, only mountains of old negative films lying dormant. I suppose I will make it eventually, but it feels like it will take a little more time. It's not as if the Seikan Ferry has disappeared from the strait, and ultimately, I still can't quite explain it to myself."
— Daido Moriyama, Memories of a Dog, Final Chapter, Asahi Shimbun, 1998
