A two-volume set of Eadweard Muybridge's iconic chronophotography collections, "Animals in Motion" and "The Human Figure in Motion." These volumes compile illustrations that record various movements of animals and humans through sequential photographs, offering a comprehensive look at crucial works in the history of photography, film, and visual culture.

Between the 1870s and 1880s, Muybridge used multiple cameras to attempt continuous recording of movement, making visible, through photography, moments of motion imperceptible to the naked eye. "Animals in Motion" contains 123 types of movements from 34 species of animals and birds, while "The Human Figure in Motion" includes 163 types of human actions such as walking, jumping, carrying, working, and sports. In total, over 8,000 chronophotographic plates are featured.

This work is not only a record of scientific motion analysis but also a significant visual experiment predating the birth of cinema. It is a historical collection that has influenced a wide range of fields including photography, film, animation, art, and design, and continues to be referenced as fundamental material for creation and research even today.

Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904)

Born in Kingston upon Thames, England. Photographer.

He moved to the United States in the 1850s and began his career as a landscape photographer. In the 1870s, he pioneered the study of motion analysis through chronophotography, becoming a groundbreaking figure in the history of photography.

His 1878 series of photographs of a galloping horse, which proved that a horse lifts all four hooves off the ground simultaneously during a gallop, caused a significant stir. Later, through collaborative research with the University of Pennsylvania, he produced extensive motion studies and published "Animal Locomotion."

His research in chronophotography is recognized as a crucial experiment preceding the birth of cinema, greatly influencing the fields of photography, film, science, and art.

Major collections include the Museum of Modern Art, George Eastman Museum, J. Paul Getty Museum, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
