While working as a clerk at Kosugiyu, a public bathhouse in Koenji, Tokyo, Shioya Ayumi has continued to depict the appeal of public bathhouses as buildings from his own perspective. Based on this experience, the book "Sento Zukai" visualizes the bathroom structure, equipment mechanisms, traffic flow, and detailed design in accurate and warm hand-drawn style.

The precision of the architectural drawings intersects with the observational eye cultivated through daily on-site work, creating a three-dimensional image of the interior of a public bath. The mechanisms and ingenuity that lie beyond the steam are explained, and readers get a real sense of how meticulously designed the space known as a public bath is, and how it has supported people's lives.

Not only is it a fascinating read as an illustrated guide, but it also has great value as an archive that records the city's landscapes that are disappearing. This book will quietly appeal to all levels of people, including those who love public baths, those interested in architecture, and those who follow the city's culture.

Honami Enya

After working at an architectural firm and at Kosugiyu, a public bath in Koenji, he began working as a painter.

He created a series of illustrated public bathhouses on social media, using isometric architectural drawing techniques and transparent watercolors to illustrate the internal structure of public bathhouses. After publishing a book compiling the series through Chuokoron-Shinsha, he has expanded his illustrated works to include buildings other than public baths, such as restaurants, galleries, and teahouses.

She has been featured in numerous media outlets, including TBS's "Jonetsu Tairiku" and NHK's "Jinsei Design U-29," and in 2022 a drama based on her life, "Yuagari Sketch," was broadcast. Her books include "Sento Illustrated Guide" and "Relaxed Like After a Bath." Her favorite bath temperature is 43 degrees.
