This is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition catalogue focusing on the stencil prints of Ryonosuke Fukui, known primarily as a Western-style painter.
It includes approximately 120 stencil prints created between the 1950s and 1960s, along with about 60 previously unreleased drawings and preliminary sketches, offering a comprehensive introduction to his unique printmaking expression.

Ryonosuke Fukui is one of post-war Japan's leading printmakers, highly acclaimed for his unique stencil prints made using mimeograph (known colloquially as "gariban"). His period of stencil print production was short, lasting approximately 10 years, and due to the nature of the medium, only very small editions could be printed. As a result, many existing works went overseas, and opportunities for them to be presented together were limited.

This book introduces the full scope of Fukui's print art, including works exhibited at the Tokyo International Print Biennale and the Ljubljana International Print Biennale. In addition to print works, it also includes related drawings, technique explanations, a chronology, and a complete catalog of works, making it a valuable resource for research on Ryonosuke Fukui.

Born in Tokyo. Western-style painter, printmaker.

One of the representative printmakers of post-war Japan. He spent a period after the war in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, his mother's hometown, where he created his debut work as a painter, "Michinoku no Fuyu" (Winter in Michinoku).
