One of the "INAX BOOKLET" series by the INAX Gallery Planning Committee. Published in 1993, this booklet was produced in conjunction with the "Staircase Narratives" exhibition held at the INAX Gallery from December of that year through February 1994. It examines staircases not merely as architectural elements for ascending and descending, but from multiple perspectives, including their form, function, history, symbolism, and relationship to human psychology.

The centerpiece, "Staircase Narratives A to Z," interprets staircases through different lenses in alphabetical order, covering topics such as detail, effect, futurism, genius, handmade, Izumo Taisha, Japan style, literature, maze, ornament, psycho, renaissance, skyscraper, universe, zero, and more.

Contributors include Eiji Katsura, Yoichi Iijima, Toji Kamata, Takashi Uzawa, Yoetsu Fujitani, Yoshiyuki Kawahigashi, Takayuki Suzuki, Shinbo Minami, Saburo Kawamoto, Hiroaki Matsuura, Hajime Yatsuka, Kiko Mozuna, Osamu Sakura, Jun Hoshikawa, Toru Kano, and Kengo Kuma.

INAX Gallery

A gallery operated by INAX. It addressed cross-disciplinary themes in architecture, design, lifestyle culture, folklore, and technology, presenting them through a combination of exhibitions and publications. INAX Gallery (later LIXIL Gallery) was opened in Ginza, Tokyo, in 1981, and was a cultural exhibition space focused on architecture, design, and ceramics that closed its 40-year history in September 2020.
