The Forgotten Islands, edited by Iwanami Shoten Publishing and featuring photographs by Iwanami Productions. This is a 1988 republication of a book originally released in 1955 as No. 148 in the "Iwanami Shashin Bunko" (Iwanami Photo Library) series, reissued as No. 66 of the "Iwanami Shashin Bunko
It explores the three islands located off the southern tip of Kyushu, tracing boat landings, villages, dwellings, work, diet, transportation, beliefs, and legends. It captures images of people traversing cliffs, carrying heavy loads along paths, tools and homes used on the islands, and the appearance of Higashi Onsen on Satsuma Iwo Jima at that time.
At the time, these islands had infrequent boat services and lacked telegraph and telephone infrastructure. The book records the life preserved in these remote areas, not as exotic scenery, but as the daily lives of the people who resided there.
One volume from the "Iwanami Shashin Bunko," which documented various parts of post-war Japan through photographs and text. This reprint wide edition was published approximately 30 years after the original 1955 version.
