An exhibition catalog focusing on Josef Albers, who significantly influenced 20th-century art as a painter, designer, and educator.

Albers, who studied at the Bauhaus, later became responsible for the basic course at the same school. After its closure, he moved to the United States, where he taught at Black Mountain College and Yale University, nurturing post-war American artists such as Cy Twombly and Robert Rauschenberg.

What Albers emphasized in his classes was "opening one's eyes." Rather than unilaterally imparting knowledge, his focus was on the process of students discovering the possibilities of colors and materials through hands-on work and trial and error.

This book was published in conjunction with the exhibition "Josef Albers' Class: Laboratory of Color and Material" held at the DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art in 2023. It includes major works such as "Homage to the Square," along with studies that shed light on the creative process, photographs and video materials of classes, and student works from Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, and Yale University.

In addition to texts by Albers himself, it also features essays by Brenda Danilowitz, Yasushi Nagahara, Ryo Sawayama, and Yusuke Kameyama. The content is rich, approaching Albers' practice from both his creative and educational aspects.

With 160 pages of rich color illustrations, this book traces the lineage of modern design education.
