NEW YORK [New Edition]

A photobook that compiles Keizo Kitajima's street snaps of New York from the 1980s, newly organized. It features a different selection of works than the first edition published by Byakuya Shobo in 1982, and was published by PCT in 2024.

In addition to monochrome photographs taken in 1981 and 1982, the book includes color photographs from the late 1980s. When Kitajima first visited New York, he stayed in the East Village and photographed people on the streets and the dilapidated urban landscape as he walked around the city day and night.

At that time, abandoned cars, destroyed public telephones, and half-demolished buildings remained on the streets, revealing a reality different from a city that was the center of the Western economy. Kitajima rarely interacted with people, attempting to use the act of photography as his point of contact with the external world, snapping the shutter before making visual judgments.

The color works taken after 1986 reveal New York rapidly transforming due to redevelopment and economic activity. From East Village galleries to the formation of Koreatown and friction surrounding immigrants, it captures a cross-section of an era where the city's structure and people's relationships were changing.

This book, reconstructed by Kitajima some 40 years later as "Another 'New York'," takes as its cue the disjunction between monochrome and color. It features 152 street snaps, an essay by Kitajima himself, and a critical essay by Shino Kuraishi titled "Stance of a Transitional Period - On Keizo Kitajima's 'New York' in the 1980s."

Keizo Kitajima (born 1954)

Born in Nagano Prefecture. Photographer.

In the late 1970s, he joined "Image Shop CAMP," an independent gallery based in Shinjuku, Tokyo. In 1979, he published "Photo Express Tokyo" (all 12 issues), and the following year, "Photo Express Okinawa," featuring photographs of Okinawa.

From 1981, he lived in New York, photographing people on the streets with a strobe. He received the 8th Ihei Kimura Award for his photobook "NEW YORK." Subsequently, he expanded his shooting locations to Eastern Europe, West Berlin, and the Soviet Union, documenting the relationship between cities and people, and changes in social systems.

From the 1990s onward, he published "PORTRAITS" and "PLACES." Based at photographers' gallery, which he established in 2001, he has been producing "UNTITLED RECORDS," a continuous photographic record of Fukushima and its surrounding areas after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Major photobooks include "Photo Express Tokyo," "NEW YORK," "A.D. 1991," "USSR 1991," "PORTRAITS+PLACES," "UNTITLED RECORDS," and "CLUB ORION." He received the Ihei Kimura Award in 1983, the Ina Nobuo Award in 2007, and the 41st Ken Domon Award in 2022.
