Keizo Kitajima

Born in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture in 1954. Photographer.
He began his photography career in earnest after participating in the "WORKSHOP Photography School," and in the late 1970s he launched the self-managed gallery "Image Shop CAMP" with Daido Moriyama and others. In 1979, he won the Newcomer Award from the Photographic Society of Japan for "Photography Express Tokyo." He also won the 8th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for his photo book "New York" (Byakuya Shobo).

Since then, he has photographed East and West Berlin, Eastern Europe, Asian cities, and the former Soviet Union, documenting urban and social tensions under the Cold War structure. Since the 1990s, he has continued to create works, updating his themes and methods, such as "PORTRAITS," which captures unmarked people, and "UNTITLED RECORDS," which captures landscapes across Japan from fixed points. At the same time, he has continued to reread and reconstruct his own past works.

A retrospective exhibition entitled "Borrowed Place, Borrowed Time" (November 29, 2025 - January 18, 2026), which surveys his work from his early days to the present, is currently being held at the Nagano Prefectural Museum of Art.
