"MOLE UNIT Photographic Magazine" was launched in 1995 by the independently run gallery "Mole."

This issue features photographer Osamu Kanemura, who is beginning to receive high praise both in Japan and overseas. The book is comprised mainly of 26 of Kanemura's early black-and-white works, which already establish the unique worldview that would lead to his later works. The photographs, which capture scenes of chaotic cities and strange scenes lurking in everyday life, leave a strong impression on the viewer.

Also included is an autobiographical essay, "Photography and Me," in which he frankly writes about what inspired him to become a photographer, the ideas he puts into his work, and his thoughts on the photography world at the time.

Osamu Kanemura (1964-)

Born in Tokyo.
He is highly regarded both at home and abroad as one of the leading figures in the Japanese contemporary photography world.

Kanemura's monochrome works are characterized by their unique perspective and composition, capturing strange scenes lurking in urban landscapes and everyday life. He presents the real appearance of cities, where order and chaos coexist, in a solid and provocative way.

While studying at Tokyo College of Photography in 1992, he was invited to take part in the Rotterdam Photography Biennale in the Netherlands, and in 1996 he was selected as one of six photographers of international renown for the exhibition "New Photography 12" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, establishing his international reputation.

He has received numerous honors, including the Japan Professional Photographers Society Newcomer's Award in 1997, the 13th Higashikawa Prize Newcomer's Award, and in 2000, he became the second youngest recipient of the 19th Domon Ken Award in history at the time. In 2014, he also received the Ina Nobuo Award.

His representative photo books include "Happiness is a Red before Exploding" (2000), "SPIDER'S STRATEGY" (2001), and "German Suplex" (2008).
