“Daido Moriyama Photo Compendium 5: 1960–1982 Tokyo Polytechnic University Shadai Gallery Archives” is a photobook compiling 930 works by Daido Moriyama from 1960 to 1982, held by the Shadai Gallery, Faculty of Arts, Tokyo Polytechnic University. This is the final volume in the "Daido Moriyama Photo Compendium" series, published by Getsuyosha in 2021.

The book includes photographs spanning approximately 20 years, from snapshots taken in Osaka in 1960 when Moriyama first ventured into photography, through his move to Tokyo in 1961, his subsequent work in Tokyo and New York, and culminating in the 1982 photobook "Light and Shadow." It contains prints used in "Nippon Gekijo Shashincho," "Hunter," "Farewell Photography," magazines such as "Camera Mainichi" and "Asahi Camera," and his personal magazine "Record," as well as unreleased photographs taken during the same period.

900 of the included works were acquired at the time of the "Daido Moriyama Photo Exhibition" held at the Shadai Gallery, Tokyo Polytechnic University in 1976. These were prints Moriyama produced as printing originals for magazines and photobooks, and are considered "vintage prints," made almost concurrently with the shooting. In 2003, 30 modern prints from "Light and Shadow" were added, forming the current archive of 930 works.

At the end of the book, the shooting year, location, image size, and first appearance of each work are organized. In addition to writings by Daido Moriyama himself, the book includes an essay by Tokyo Polytechnic University President Hiroaki Yoshino on the history of the archive's formation. This 832-page collection traces the 1976 exhibition, Moriyama's relationship with Eikoh Hosoe, and the state of the Japanese photography world regarding "original prints" at the time, providing insight into Moriyama's early creative process and the history of the prints themselves.

Daido Moriyama (b. 1938)

Born in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture, in 1938. Photographer.

After working in design, he decided to pursue photography and moved from Osaka to Tokyo in 1961. After working as Eikoh Hosoe's assistant, he went independent and published his photographs mainly in magazines. In 1968, he published "Nippon Gekijo Shashincho." The same year, he joined "Provoke."

Subsequently, he published numerous photobooks, including "Farewell Photography," "Hunter," "Light and Shadow," "Shinjuku," and "71-NY." He continues to capture images in various ways, often walking through cities and streets, producing blurred, out-of-focus, grainy monochrome photographs.

He has held numerous exhibitions in museums and galleries both in Japan and abroad. He is one of the most important photographers in considering Japanese photography from the 1960s onwards.
