This book was published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Nikon Salon. It is a collection of records tracing the half-century of the Nikon Salon through exhibition postcards from 1968 to 2017.
The Nikon Salon was established in 1968 to commemorate Nikon's 50th anniversary as a venue for photo exhibitions. Starting in Ginza, it expanded to Shinjuku and Osaka, supporting Japanese photographic culture as a place for both professional and amateur photographers to present and appreciate photographic works.
This book includes numerous invitation postcards, known as DMs, from past photo exhibitions. DMs from various eras are arranged alongside the exhibition dates, photographer names, and titles. While the photo exhibitions themselves disappear once they conclude, the postcards subtly preserve the fact that the exhibition took place, the atmosphere of the era it reflected, and the names of the photographers.
The featured photographers range from those already established in photo history to artists whose information is now difficult to trace. Through these small printed photo exhibition postcards, one can observe another facet of Japanese photography that is not evident solely from photobooks or exhibitions.
The book also includes "Half a Century of the Nikon Salon" by Manabu Torihara, "The Role and Future of the Nikon Salon" by Kotaro Iizawa, and a special discussion with Kotaro Iizawa, Mitsuhiko Imamori, Keizo Kitajima, Tokihiro Sato, and Yurie Nagashima. It is a highly valuable resource for anyone interested in photo exhibitions, DMs, photographic culture, and ephemera.
