Katsuhito Nishikawa: Echoes of Silence Exhibition Catalog Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art

This is the official catalogue published to coincide with the first retrospective exhibition in Japan of German-based artist Katsuhito Nishikawa (1949–).

For over 40 years, Nishikawa has focused his attention on light and darkness and the shadows that emerge between them, developing a wide range of media including sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, installations and architectural structures. His white sculptures, made from wood and plaster, harbor a subtle gradation within their simple structure, and stand quietly, as if absorbing the surrounding light and sound. They simply exist without flaunting their presence. This serenity is the core of Nishikawa's work.

This book is centered around an exhibition of approximately 70 pieces curated by the artist himself, and is composed entirely of Nishikawa's own photographs, including the photographs of the works. By superimposing installation views and images of the individual works, the silence that permeates the space and the differences in the texture of each piece emerge.

The white-based binding features two types of embossing, which echo the delicate gradations of shadows that run through the work. While being a catalog, it also has the feel of an artist's book, condensing the essence of the artist's aesthetics and creativity.

Katsuhito Nishikawa (1949-)

Born in Tokyo in 1949. After graduating from Keio University, he moved to Germany at the age of 23. He became interested in Germany, the birthplace of the Bauhaus, and studied at the University of Fine Arts in Munich before completing his graduate studies at the University of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf , where he studied under Erwin Herich .

Since 1994, he has been involved in the activities of the Insel Hombroich Museum in Neuss. Based in an atelier adjacent to the museum, he develops projects that are conscious of integrating with nature. He continues to create works that cross disciplines, including sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, installation, furniture, and architectural structures. Using simple structures and austere materials, he has presented works that explore the themes of light and darkness, and the shadows that spread between them.

He has exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennale and the Venice Biennale, received the Düsseldorf City Cultural Encouragement Award, and is a professor emeritus at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Hombroich, Germany.
