"The Town Where You Live" is a photo book compiled by Okuyama Yoshiyuki based on the series of the same name that was serialized in the magazine "EYESCREAM" (March 2014 issue to November 2016 issue).
Set in the city of Tokyo, the work is made up of a series of works photographed with a Polaroid camera of 35 women and cityscapes.
Vacant lots with piled-up guardrails, narrow abandoned roads, pavements with temporary lettering - everywhere in the ever-growing city of Tokyo, "distortions" where the past and present overlap appear. With such scenery as a backdrop, Okuyama photographs her subjects as she walks through the city, quietly capturing the relationship between "the city of Tokyo and Tokyo girls."
The key word in this work is "space."
The fluctuations of emotions, the gaps in time, the spaces between places. By capturing not a complete "point" but the fluid "lines" before and after it, the rawness and presence of human presence emerges.
The overlapping sensation of the staged and the everyday, the past and the present, the new and the nostalgic is further solidified by the square screen of the Polaroid medium.
In addition to portraits, the book also includes landscape photos of Tokyo taken while walking between towns. The resulting portrait is a portrait of not only the subject, but also the city in which the person might live.
This book features 35 women who symbolized Tokyo at the time.
Although it is a photo book, it can also be read as a record that captures the atmosphere of an era.
