This is the first book by photographer Masafumi Sanai, who brought about a decisive shift in Japanese photography in the 1990s.
First edition, published in 1997.
Sanai, who learned photography on his own, emerged as an artist who symbolized the new sensibilities of the 1990s, and gained attention after winning the Photo New Century Award.
This book contains ordinary, everyday scenes, with no special incidents. In the subtle balance of light and shadow, distance and time, fleeting moments rise up as irreplaceable fragments of "life."
The book design by Satoru Machiguchi is highly regarded as a book that symbolizes the photographic culture of the 1990s.
Although it was not noticed when it was first published, it was reevaluated later and reprinted up to the 4th edition in 2007. The 5th edition is scheduled to be published in 2025.
The unique perspective and sense of color established in "Living" developed into the subsequent photobook "MAP" (2000), for which Sanai won the 2001 (26th) Kimura Ihei Photo Award.
This book is the origin of his creative work and a masterpiece that greatly changed the course of Japanese photography thereafter.
