This is one of the early representative works by Korean-born, Japan-based photographer Yang Seung-woo . Published by Shinpusha in 2006, it won the Grand Prize at the 9th Shinpusha Hirama Itaru Photography Awards.
Since coming to Japan in 1996, Liang has been photographing the outskirts of the city, primarily in Shinjuku's Kabukicho district. This book is a documentary that follows the homeless people he encountered during that time. They often said, "I'm from this side, you're from that side." As if attempting to transcend that boundary, the author stood on the same ground, sleeping and staying with them as he took his photographs.
What is depicted is the dramatic yet harsh reality of people living in what is known as the "dark side" of society. However, there is also a certain humor, pride, and modest hope. Diving into the midst of the growing social disparity under the Koizumi administration, the film brings to light with a warm, raw portrayal the contours of people who tend to be made anonymous.
What separates "over there" from "here"? This question is certainly not someone else's problem. This work can be said to be the origin of Yang Seung-woo's work, which directly captures the reality that lies just next to the city.
