Toshio Shibata’s *Nihon Tenkei* (Typical Landscapes) is one of his most representative works. It is a photobook that captures civil engineering structures across Japan—such as vast construction sites, dams, retaining walls built into mountainous areas, and erosion control facilities—using an 8×10 large-format camera. The dense, detailed depiction provided by the large-format camera vividly reveals the texture of the concrete, the quality of the slopes, and the relationship between these artificial objects and the surrounding topography.

In these monochrome frames, structures like dams, retaining walls, and embankments appear not only as entities that drastically alter nature but also as objects possessed of symmetry, repetition, and geometric form. Through a rigorous composition conscious of horizontal and vertical lines, the tension that arises between nature and human artifice, as well as the visual beauty found within that tension, are presented simultaneously.

James Enyeart, who contributed to this book, points out that "visual pleasure" and "social inquiry" coexist in Shibata’s photographs. While capturing the civil engineering structures that transform natural landscapes, he does not simply criticize their existence; he embraces the very beauty of the forms born from their design and construction within the frame. This contradiction and the quiet tension it creates characterize the work.

There is an anecdote that the title of this book was originally intended to be *Nihon Tenkei* (Japan Scenery), but due to an input error at the printers, it became *Nihon Tenkei* (Typical Landscapes) and was published as such. The resulting term, *Nihon Tenkei*, resonates beyond mere fragments of individual landscapes, serving as a title that signifies the structures and forms that repeatedly appear throughout the Japanese landscape, as well as the characteristics of the landscape itself as carved by modernization.

This book contains works photographed between 1983 and 1991 in various locations across Japan, including Kanagawa, Saitama, Niigata, Miyagi, Akita, Miyazaki, Hokkaido, Kumamoto, and Nara. It also includes the essay "Terraces of Splendor and Destiny" by James Enyeart. In 1992, Shibata received the 17th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for this book.

Toshio Shibata 1949–

Born in Tokyo in 1949. Graduated from the Department of Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts and completed his graduate studies there. In 1975, he received a scholarship from the Belgian Ministry of Education and enrolled in the photography department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where he began his career in earnest. He returned to Japan in 1979.

He is known for his work using large-format cameras to capture artificial structures built into nature, such as dams, erosion control levees, and concrete retaining walls throughout Japan. Through dense monochrome depiction and rigorous composition, he has presented the structures and forms that appear in the modern Japanese landscape.

In 1992, he received the 17th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for his photobook *Nihon Tenkei*. That same year, he was selected for "New Photography 8" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He held a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 1997, and his solo exhibition "Landscape" was held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in 2008. In 2009, he received the Photographic Society of Japan's Creative Work Award and the Higashikawa Award for Domestic Photographer.

His works are held in the collections of museums in Japan and abroad, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), The National Museum of Modern Art (Tokyo), and the Centre Pompidou.
