Toshio Shibata has captured the interplay of nature and man-made objects with a calm, drama-free gaze. This book was produced in conjunction with his photo exhibition "juxtapose" (held at Kamakura Gallery in 2005), which could be called one of the pinnacles of his work.
This book includes an original print, making it a special edition that allows you to experience the world of the work directly.

The concept of this book is linked to Shibata's characteristically detailed depictions using a large-format camera, as well as the diverse printing techniques he experimented with at the exhibitions of the time -- monochrome gelatin silver prints, color Type C prints, digital output, platinum prints, and more.
Concrete structures confronting the scale of nature, man-made forms suddenly appearing in the landscape. Shibata captures the subtle sense of incongruity and tranquil beauty that this juxtaposition brings about with a thorough structural perspective.

Not only is this a highly polished photobook, but the inclusion of original prints makes it a highly valuable item for collections. It offers the deepest insight into Shibata's quiet yet powerful photographic expression.

Toshio Shibata

Born in Tokyo in 1949.
After graduating from the Graduate School of Oil Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, he studied at the Photography Department of the Royal Academy of Ghent as a Belgian government scholarship student, and began to focus on photographic expression.

He is known for his style of meticulously capturing with a large camera the interplay of natural and man-made structures, such as dams, retaining walls, and road structures found throughout Japan, and his tranquil and tense landscapes have been highly praised internationally.

In 1992, he won the 17th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for his photo exhibition "Typical Japan." In the same year, his work was selected for MoMA's "New Photography 8," solidifying his international reputation.
In 1997, his solo exhibition "Toshio Shibata" was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
Since the 2000s, he has expanded his range of expression by working on color works, and in 2008 he held a large-scale solo exhibition, "Landscape - Toshio Shibata," at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.
The following year, in 2009, he received the Photographic Society of Japan Artist Award and the Higashikawa Award Domestic Artist Award.

His works are held in the collections of many major art museums both in Japan and abroad, including MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pompidou Centre, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka.

In recent years, he has also received high praise for his exhibition "Jam Session: Ishibashi Foundation Collection x Toshio Shibata x Risaku Suzuki: Photography and Painting - From Cézanne" (April 29 - July 10, 2022) held at the Artizon Museum.

He continues to focus on the structures and rhythms hidden in the boundary between nature and the artificial, and is a photographer who is at the forefront of landscape expression in Japan.
