Kumo / Spider is a picture book created by Susumu Shingu, known for his sculptures moved by natural forces such as wind and water. It was published by Bunka Publishing Bureau in 1979 as Shingu's second picture book, following Ichigo in 1975.

The book depicts the habits of the garden spider, which spins its web in the evening and takes it down in the morning, and the passage of time, along with the changing clouds in the sky and stars at night. By using tracing paper, the process of web construction is expressed through the overlapping of the pages themselves. The text is minimal, with most of the story conveyed through illustrations. Shingu's observation of nature and his sculptural interest in time and movement are translated into the form of a picture book.

Susumu Shingu (born 1937)

Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1937. Sculptor, plastic artist.

Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Painting, in 1960. Studied in Italy from 1960 to 1966. After returning to Japan, he primarily created sculptures moved by natural energy such as wind and water. In 1969, he created "Floating Sound" for the Japan World Exposition, and in 1970, he installed "Kaze no Michi" (Wind's Path) in Senri Kita Park. He stayed at the Harvard University Center for Visual Arts from 1971 to 1972.

While working on numerous outdoor sculptures and projects both in Japan and abroad, he also creates picture books. Kumo is his second picture book, following Ichigo published in 1975. In 1979, he received the Isaburo Yoshida Award for the design of his outdoor works.
