Chishu Ryu (1904–1993)

Born in Kumamoto Prefecture. Actor.

After joining Shochiku Kamata Studios, he appeared in numerous films. Known as a regular actor in Yasujiro Ozu's films, he portrayed fathers and elderly men with quiet performances in works such as "Late Spring," "Early Summer," and "Tokyo Story."

He was active in Japanese cinema from before the war to the postwar period, including Yoji Yamada's "Tora-san" series. He established a unique presence through his restrained gestures and speech.
