Rat Hole Gallery's photobook "Takuma Nakahira Okinawa" (2017) is a collection of mostly previously unpublished color photographs that Nakahira took in Okinawa between 1974 and 1978. This period, which spanned the period when he lost memory and lost speech due to illness in 1977, marked an important turning point in his life when he moved away from the radical expression of his early period and towards his later style of honestly recording the reality in front of his eyes. This book is a valuable record of Nakahira's own transformation as he attempted to reconstruct his relationship with the world through photography while capturing the unique landscapes, plants, light and shadows of Okinawa, and was published in conjunction with the gallery's exhibition.
