Masaru Tatsuki's "Is the Blood Still Red? 2011.11.19–20" is a photobook published to coincide with his solo exhibition, after he received the 37th Ihei Kimura Photography Award for "Tohoku." It presents a new perspective on facing the Tohoku region after the Great East Japan Earthquake. This book consists of photographs taken during the first deer hunt in Karadani, Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture, after the earthquake, which Tatsuki accompanied for two days in November 2011. Tatsuki had been participating in hunts in the same area since 2008, continuously observing Tohoku not as a disaster-stricken area, but as an extension of daily life rooted in the land. The act of chasing animals, spilling blood, and taking lives re-emphasizes the reality of a land where life and death are intimately intertwined. A distinguishing feature is that each image is presented with strong density due to the concise number of pages and large-format binding. The question "Is the blood still red?" is also a question to confirm whether the sense of everyday life, obscured by the earthquake, still breathes in this land. This book is not a record of a disaster, but rather portrays the continuous time of life and body that spans before and after it, a book that shifts the fixed gaze of "disaster-stricken area."
