Hiromi Tsuchida (1939–)

Born in 1939 in Minami-Echizen Town (formerly Imajo Town), Fukui Prefecture.
After graduating from the Faculty of Engineering at Fukui University, he worked for Pola Cosmetics Honpo while studying at Tokyo College of Photography. In 1971, he left the company and became a freelancer.

In 1976, he produced his masterpiece, "Zokushin," which reexamined the Japanese national identity. Since then, he has consistently produced works on the theme of "Considerations on Japan," through works such as "Counting Sands," which captures urbanizing crowds, "Party," which depicts the festive space of the bubble era, "Zokushin 2," which symbolizes Japanese festivals, and the "Hiroshima Trilogy," which brings the memory of the atomic bomb to the present. Since 1986, he has continued his self-portrait series, "Aging."

He received the Ina Nobuo Award in 1978, the Photographic Society of Japan Award in 1984, the Domon Ken Award in 2008 , and the Photographic Society of Japan Achievement Award in 2022.
His works are housed in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Modern, and other major museums both in Japan and abroad.
Currently living in Tokyo.
