Wan Chaofan's latest photobook, "Yes, The River Knows – Huangpu River."
This is the second installment in a series, following his previous work, "Yes, The River Knows – Arakawa," which received the 44th New Cosmos of Photography Excellence Award in 2021, and the 24th Jun Miki Award and 23rd Sagamihara Photo New Face Encouragement Award in 2023.

The previous work focused on the Arakawa River, the water source that supports Tokyo, where the artist currently lives. This sequel turns its gaze to the Huangpu River, a major river flowing through Shanghai, China. For Wan, the Huangpu River is a river of his "home country," but for him, a native of Beijing, it is not his hometown. Therefore, he approached this river with a different sense of distance than the Arakawa River, allowing for a fresh perspective.

With the "image of rivers" cultivated by the Arakawa River as a backdrop, Wan explores the relationship between cities and rivers, comparing the two rivers and highlighting their differences. This work embodies an attempt to discover human activities through the rivers that flow through cities.

A 6x17 medium format camera was used for the photography. The expansive view provided by the wide format fully captures the grandeur and complex expressions of the Huangpu River.

This book marks a significant milestone in this series, which re-examines the relationship between cities and people through rivers.
