"Youth of Modern Japan: Masterpieces of Creative Prints" is the exhibition catalog for the exhibition of the same name held at The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama and Utsunomiya Museum of Art. Focusing primarily on the creative print collection of The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama, and incorporating works from private collections, the book traces the history of modern Japanese prints from the 1900s to the 1940s.

This exhibition introduces the evolution of the Creative Print movement, starting with works symbolized by Kanae Yamamoto's "Fisherman," moving through "Tsukubae" by Kyokichi Tanaka, Koshiro Onchi, and Shizuo Fujimori, and continuing into the 1920s with the Japan Creative Print Association, and the 1930s with the Japan Print Association, the Shin-Hanga Shudan, and the Zokei Hanga Kyokai. The book examines, through works and archival materials, the philosophy of the Creative Print movement—which advocated for "self-drawn, self-carved, and self-printed" works—and its subsequent diverse developments.

In addition to approximately 400 works exhibited, the catalog includes essays such as "On Creative Prints" by Koji Yukiyama, "The Connector: Notes on Koshiro Onchi" by Junji Teraguchi, a study on the circle surrounding "Tsukubae" by Yoshiko Inoue, a study on the print department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School Alumni Association by Nobuko Ito, and a study on print paper in modern Japan by Masami Sakamoto. It also features a chronology related to the "Japanese Creative Print Movement," artist biographies, and a list of exhibits.

This volume captures the Creative Print movement not only as a field of modern Japanese art, but also in conjunction with the shifts in artistic perspectives regarding "individuality" and "creativity" from the late Meiji period to the early Showa period.
