A photography technique book by photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki, “Experience!! The Art of Secret Snapshots — This Is Infrared Photography!” Published by Sunday in 1981, this book explains special methods of photography and processing using infrared film and infrared flash, accompanied by illustrations and diagrams.
In the early 1970s, Yoshiyuki gained attention for his infrared photographs of couples gathered in parks at night, such as Shinjuku Chuo Park and Yoyogi Park. By visualizing scenes in the darkness that are difficult for the human eye to capture, his method brought to light the anonymous desires and structures of gaze hidden in the urban night, culminating in his seminal series “Document Park” (1980).
This book provides detailed introductions to practical know-how for infrared photography, including equipment modifications, conditions at the time of shooting, darkroom processing and enlarging methods, and the photographer’s perspective. In addition to technical explanations, it incorporates Yoshiyuki’s experiences and anecdotes as a photographer, offering insights into his philosophy of photography.
The “Document Park” series was introduced internationally in later years through exhibitions at Yossi Milo Gallery in New York and the publication of the English-language photobook “The Park” (Hatje Cantz / Yossi Milo Gallery, 2007).
This book is an invaluable resource for understanding the photography techniques and ideas that underpin Yoshiyuki’s body of work.

Kohei Yoshiyuki (Yoshiyuki Kohei) 1946–2022
Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1946. Photographer. Aspiring to become a professional photographer, he moved to Tokyo and worked as a camera shop clerk and darkroom technician before working as a photographer for a foreign news agency in the 1970s. He began working as a freelancer in 1978.
In the early 1970s, he gained attention for his photographs taken with infrared film and infrared flash of couples gathered in Tokyo’s parks at night and the people who peered at them. In 1972, some of his photographs were published in Weekly Shincho.
Thus, the photographs taken in parks such as Shinjuku, Yoyogi, and Aoyama in the 1970s were published in 1980 as the photobook “Document Park.” At his solo exhibition held at Komai Gallery in Tokyo in 1979, the exhibition employed a method in which visitors viewed life-size prints using flashlights in the dark venue.
From the mid-2000s onward, “Document Park” was reevaluated overseas, and in 2007, he held a solo exhibition “The Park” at Yossi Milo Gallery in New York. That same year, the English-language photobook “The Park” was published by Hatje Cantz and Yossi Milo Gallery.
Yoshiyuki’s work is known for questioning the relationship of “seeing/being seen” in the act of voyeurism, as well as the relationships between photographer and subject, and photograph and viewer.
His major photobooks include “Document Park” (1980), “Kohei Yoshiyuki: Infrared Light” (1992), and “Kohei Yoshiyuki: The Park” (2007). He passed away in 2022.
