A photo book by Lee Friedlander titled "DRESSING UP FASHION WEEK NYC." This volume collects a series of photographs taken in 2006, when the artist went behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week to capture the work of models, hairstylists, makeup artists, manicurists, dressers, and photographers preparing for the shows.

The project began through an exchange with Kathy Ryan, the photo editor of *The New York Times Magazine*. Friedlander expressed a desire to photograph places he could not easily access on his own, and with Ryan’s assistance, he gained access to the backstage areas of fashion shows. Following a test shoot at Oscar de la Renta, he documented several shows held at Bryant Park during Fashion Week, including those of Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Proenza Schouler.

Friedlander’s focus was not on the finished look of the runway, but on the fast-paced "work" occurring just moments before. Within the frames, multiple arms and hands surrounding models, fragments of bodies, equipment, mirrors, and clothing intersect, reassembling the chaos of backstage into complex compositions. In an included conversation, Friedlander himself notes that he has long been photographing "people at work," and that at Fashion Week, he was particularly interested in the sight of people working.

This book includes a conversation between Friedlander and Kathy Ryan. Centered on the group of photographs originally published in *The New York Times Magazine* in October 2006 as "Blush, Sweat, and Tears," they discuss the background of the shoot, the people working backstage, the distance maintained from the models, the selection of photographs, and Friedlander’s own photographic approach. Published in 2015 by the Yale University Art Gallery.

Lee Friedlander 1934–

Born in Aberdeen, Washington, USA, on July 14, 1934. A photographer who has spent many years documenting the American social landscape, including urban streets, people, self-portraits, landscapes, monuments, and factories. He is known for photographs that incorporate urban crowds and multiple visual elements into a single frame, assembled into complex compositions.

In 1967, he participated in the "New Documents" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Since then, he has published numerous photo books, including *Self-Portrait* (1970), *The American Monument* (1976), *Factory Valleys* (1982), *Nudes* (1991), *At Work* (2002), and *America by Car* (2010). He published *Dressing Up: Fashion Week NYC* in 2015.

"People at work" is a recurring theme in Friedlander’s practice. In 1998, the Cleveland Museum of Art held the exhibition "People Working: Photographs by Lee Friedlander," and between 2003 and 2004, an exhibition related to *At Work* toured cities including Cologne, Amsterdam, Paris, and Chicago. In 2017, "At Work" was also held at the FOTO/INDUSTRIA Biennial in Bologna. The behind-the-scenes view of Fashion Week captured in *DRESSING UP* can be understood as an extension of this perspective on the "work" people do.

In 2005, he received the Hasselblad Award. His work is held in the collections of major museums both domestically and internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
