Kaze (Wind), a photobook by Yasuji Yaguchi. This volume compiles the work of a photographer who passed away suddenly at the age of 43 in 1976, curated posthumously by his fellow photographers.
Yasuji Yaguchi was born in Tokushima Prefecture in 1933. He worked in the construction industry and began taking photographs at the age of 39. He joined the Naruto Binboke Club, the Japan Professional Photographers Society (Naruto branch), and the Japan Realist Photographers Association (Tokushima branch), capturing a vast number of photographs in just a few short years while interacting with artists like Shinzo Maeda and Bon Fujii.
This book was published after Yaguchi's death at the suggestion of his fellow photographers. Shinzo Maeda, Koji Hashimoto, and Yoichi Kamiyama were involved in its editing and production, selecting 108 photographs from a collection of approximately 30,000. It is composed primarily of works presented in solo exhibitions and at the "Shiten" (Viewpoint) exhibition, including series such as "Wind," "Indigo House," and "Scars."
His profound respect for Ken Domon, the tradition of realist photography, and his gaze upon the land and people of Tokushima are layered with his unique, construction-honed ability to perceive structure, as well as his sensitivity to natural light, the forms of objects, and the subtle signs of daily life. While rooted in documentary photography, the book also features works with sculptural compositions and scenes suggestive of landscapes of the mind.
The end of the book includes essays such as "Yasuji Yaguchi and the Yoshino River" by Tomomi Ito and "The Naked Eye and Beginner's Mind" by Bon Fujii, along with an afterword by Shinzo Maeda and a photographic chronology. It is a photobook that summarizes the work Yaguchi produced during his short career.
