Atsushi Yoshie's photobook features photographs of "local cities" across Japan. There is no such thing as a unique "local city"; rather, it is a relative term referring to the countless cities outside the Tokyo metropolitan area. Drawn to these ambiguous places, Yoshie traveled through Gunma Prefecture and other regions, capturing ordinary landscapes such as concrete block walls, irrigation channels, signboards, houses, and roads.

There is little information to identify the specific locations, and the landscapes in the photographs appear to be "here" while simultaneously looking like "somewhere else." Familiar suburban scenes, detached from their place names, connect to form a fictional city. In his afterword, Yoshie himself describes his longing for such a "city that is here and yet also somewhere else."

The book contains 122 photographs on 128 pages. The main text is printed using LED-UV, reproducing the declining sunlight, shadows, and film-like texture with thick ink. The cover is a hardcover specification with a large photograph, matte PP lamination, and foil stamping. The book design is by Koichi Hara, and the printing is by Sun-M Color.

The photobook was published by Sohkyusha in 2014, following a solo exhibition of the same name at Shinjuku Nikon Salon in 2012. In 2015, "Local Cities" was also presented at Gallery 722. This early photobook connects to Yoshie's subsequent ongoing photography of suburbs, rivers, and local landscapes. Limited to 600 copies.
